Editorial Independence

Editorial Control:

Editorial independence is central to our mission of providing honest, balanced and ethical journalism. We do not participate in or accept any support for lobbying activities. We do not accept any funds earmarked for advocacy. All our employees agree not to donate to any political campaigns or candidates, or participate in partisan activities while employed at DCNF.  All editorial decisions are made exclusively by our editors, with no direction from donors. Donors do not have any input on specific reporting, editorial review, or story selection.

Just to Be Clear: We are not part of the Daily Caller:

The Daily Caller and the Daily Caller News Foundation are two separate organizations with different missions, goals and tax statuses. We are often confused with each other, despite us being two separate and distinct organizations. We’re a nonprofit newswire service (like AP or Reuters, except we don’t charge those who wish to republish our work). The Daily Caller, like many other outlets, subscribes to our newswire and republishes our work. To be clear, we are a 501(c)3 and depend on the generosity of our donors while the Daily Caller is a for-profit news site.

The boundaries between the two organizations are clear:

  • Financial: There is no commingling of finances between the two organizations. The Daily Caller has no access to, nor does it receive, any portion of donations or funding received by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
  • Content: The Daily Caller News Foundation focuses on breaking news, policy reporting and ground-breaking investigative reporting. Unlike the Daily Caller, we do not cover sports, entertainment or lifestyle news.
  • Co-Founders: Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel founded both the Daily Caller and the Daily Caller News Foundation. Tucker Carlson no longer participates nor has any vested interest in the Daily Caller, but he continues as an honorary member on the board of directors of the Daily Caller News Foundation. As a volunteer, Tucker Carlson receives zero pay or benefits.

The biggest benefit of the current relationship with the Daily Caller is audience growth. The Daily Caller also feeds our stories into its fourteen-million-member-strong social media network, comprising a broader reader demographic that other conservative media outlets have so far been unsuccessful in targeting.

The Daily Caller’s impact statistics are as follows:

Twitter:  1,090,136  followers

Facebook: Over 13 million likes and follows on numerous pages

YouTube: 785,815 subscribers (6 Channels)

Donor Stewardship and Intent:

We are supported annually by the generosity of thousands of supporters and we take stewardship of all donations received very seriously.  Our tax returns are readily available here, and we also go the extra step every year by authorizing an independent audit review.  We acknowledge and appreciate the trust given to us by our donors and we take great care to honor donor intent. To that end we have received the Platinum Seal of Transparency, from Candid , Inc. – the only pre-grant due-diligence product that is 100% IRS compliant

Although most of the donations we receive are used for general support, some funds are earmarked for the five following programs:

  1. Journalist Fellowship Training  Program (American Journalism Institute) — learn more about our Fellows program by watching this VIDEO.
  2. Video News Clips: In Their Own Words
  3. Investigative Group
  4. Policy Reporting
  5. Commentary: Big Tent Ideas
