A Hamden, Conn., police officer raced to save an emotionally troubled man from jumping off the roof of a building earlier in April, new body camera footage reveals.

Officer Justin Martin answered a call about a man fighting another person at the Whitney Center, an assisted and independent living community, reports Fox61. The troubled resident took off and headed towards the sixth story when Martin arrived to speak to him and Whitney staff.

The officer chased after him, only to see the man about to fling himself off the sixth story roof. Body camera footage shows the officer frantically shouting “hey!” as the man tries to throw himself over.

Martin then jumps and grabs the man before he can fully throw himself off the building.

“I just wanted to catch up to him. I didn’t want him to hurt himself. I didn’t want to lose sight of him and I didn’t know the building so I wanted to make sure that I was able to catch up to him,” Martin told WTHN.

The man was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for a check-up.

“We thankfully had the Hamden Police Department show up and they were very instrumental, very helpful in helping resolve the issue,” CEO and president of Whitney Center, Mike Rambarose, said.
