British PM Outlines Final Brexit Terms For Parliamentary Vote

British Prime Minister Theresa May proposed a “clean” breakup with the European Union and dismissed any chance of an associate membership during a speech Tuesday.

The highly anticipated speech could set the course for Britain’s relationship with the EU moving forward. Many anti-Brexit politicians want to remain in the single market, but May dismissed the possibility of a partial membership.

“Let me be clear, what I am proposing cannot mean remaining in the single market,” May said. “Not partial membership of the European Union, associate membership of the European Union, or anything that leaves us half in, half out.”

May further said she will fight to gain control over borders and rejected the supremacy of the European Court of Justice.

She still wants to maintain a common travel area between the United Kingdom and Ireland and keep tariff-free trade with the EU.

“This agreement should allow for the freest possible trade in goods and services between Britain and the EU’s member states,” May said. “It should give British companies the maximum possible freedom to trade with and operate within European markets and let European businesses do the same in Britain.”

The final Brexit terms will be voted on by the parliament, but May didn’t say what would happen if it gets rejected.
