Vanderbilt University’s Nameplates Now Include Your Preferred Pronouns

Vanderbilt University is now issuing staff nameplates that include staffers’ preferred gender pronouns alongside more conventional information like their name and job title.

A photo of the new nameplates first surfaced on Twitter earlier this week, showing four different nameplates that all carry preferred pronouns.

Now, an assistant diversity coordinator can declare a preference for ze, zir, and zirs as zir pronouns.

The new nameplates come just days after Vanderbilt began decorating the campus with posters teaching students how to use unconventional gender-neutral pronouns like “ze” and “zirs.” They also come a month after Vanderbilt returned a $1.2 million donation so that it could rename Confederate Memorial Hall.

Vanderbilt’s annual cost of attendance is currently $63,532.
