Smoking Train, Several Malfunctions Cause Brutal Commute On DC Metro

A smoking train and other malfunctions across the Washington, D.C., metro system dealt brutal delays to rush-hour riders Wednesday afternoon.

A train pulled into the L’Enfant Plaza station smoking heavily from underneath one of the cars at roughly 5 p.m. EST. Officials offloaded passengers from the train, which filled part of the station with haze. The train sat in the station for almost a half hour before it was moved, causing major delays along the Green and Yellow lines, according to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) officials.

Delays also hit riders on the Orange and Silver lines after an unspecified train malfunction at the Farragut West and East Falls Church stations shortly after 5 p.m. Metro officials told riders to expect residual delays riding in the direction of Reston on the Silver line. Trains were briefly held at the Ballston station while workers cleared the train from East Falls Chruch.

Regular service on the Orange and Silver lines resumed at 6:30 p.m. and officials restored normal service at the L’Enfant Plaza station at 6:49 p.m. It remains unclear what caused the train to start smoking.
