North Korea has fired another ballistic missile into the East China Sea two weeks after an illegal missile launch.
According to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea fired a ballistic missile out of Eunyul Village in South Hwanghae Province at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday.
This belligerent behavior comes on the heels of Pyongyang’s bluster that the U.S. “crossed the red line” and declared war by sanctioning Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and pushing ahead with plans for war games with South Korea.
This latest incident also follows a declaration by South Korean President Park Geun-hye Tuesday that the controversial decision to deploy the Thermal High-Altitude Aerial Defense (THAAD) system on South Korean soil is “irreversible.”
This is not the first time North Korea has acted out over the THAAD deployment. In response to the announcement early last month that the U.S. and South Korea would install the THAAD system, North Korea responded by firing three ballistic missiles into the East China Sea in a weak, yet symbolic, show of force.
North Korea, China, and Russia have been been highly critical of THAAD, with each claiming this missile defense system will threaten each country’s respective national security.
Following North Korea’s missile launches last month, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said that “this provocation only serves to increase the international community’s resolve in countering the DPRK’s prohibited activities.”
