In The Chaos And Heartache Of The DNC, There Is A Safe Space

PHILADELPHIA — The Democratic National Committee has set up a “recovery” space at the convention this week, where upset, disappointed or just plum tuckered out supporters can find a chair to sit in and a relatively quiet place to recover from the thought of Donald Trump in the White House.
The small space is sectioned off with a large curtain and contains about a dozen chairs in a semi-circle. Two signs reading “Quiet Room” and “Recovery and Wellness Room” mark the entrance.

Normally the safe space would seem off at the convention of a party built on assuaging hurt feelings, but given the heartache and disorder that marked the start of the convention Monday, it actually seems appropriate. (RELATED: Bernie Supporters ‘Weeping’ On Convention Floor)
Between the embarrassing DNC email leak, the disorganized gaveling in of the convention, and the prospect of swallowing a Hillary Clinton nomination (and liking it), Democrats have plenty to be upset about. Add to that the constant fear mongering over a Trump presidency and the passionate tears of Bernie supporters, and the safe space starts to look kind of small.
Nonetheless, no one was using the space when this reporter visited.
The safe space is situated next to a similarly structured “Interfaith Prayer Room” designed to be especially accommodating to Muslims, and is just down the hall from one of the convention’s “all-gender” bathrooms, which has definitely met a need for at least one curious journalist.
