Las Vegas unions are planning to hold a large rally Wednesday afternoon in protest against a hotel owned by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and the Bartenders Union Local 165 have fought to unionize the hotel for close to a year. Workers voted to unionize Dec. 7, but management refused to recognize the vote despite federal pressure. The unions have already held several large rallies and expect thousands to attend their latest one.
“Trump Hotel Las Vegas employees voted in a National Labor Relations Board to unionize through the Culinary Union but Trump Hotel management still refuses to negotiate a contract,” Local 226 detailed in a press release. “Donald Trump has made a career of enriching himself at the expense of working people, including his own employees in Las Vegas.”
The American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) has also agreed to attend the rally in support of the unionization campaign. AFSCME is one of the largest labor unions in the country at 1.6 million members. It also wields considerable political influence and has been opposed to Trump throughout the election.
The hotel has also been accused of trying to illegal silence workers who supported the unions. The NLRB has filed complaints against the hotel that includes allegations of physical assault, verbal abuse, intimidation and threats to silence union supporters. Local 226 has accused the hotel of unfair suspension of five employees in 2014 and restricting the right of workers to show union support in 2015.
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) region director ruled the election was valid and management must recognize the union. Hotel management filed a lawsuit Oct. 14 alleging the two locals knowingly lied in a flyer about Trump staying at a unionized hotel.
The Las Vegas dispute has since added fuel to unions oppose Trump and his bid for the White House. The AFL-CIO declared Trump its loser of the week Feb. 22 over the Las Vegas labor dispute and again Feb. 29 for saying he likes right-to-work. Several labor unions have joined forces to oppose him the the grassroots level as well.
