Rep. Dave Brat, the conservative Republican who unseated former Majority Leader Eric Cantor in one of the most notable political upsets in recent history, announced Friday he is considering running for Sen. Tim Kaine’s Senate seat.

While discussing his new book, “American Underdog: Proof That Principles Matter,”on CNN’s “RunningMate” podcast Friday, Brat said if presumed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton chooses Kaine as her running mate, he certainly wouldn’t rule out putting in his bid in a special election.

Brat told The Daily Caller News Foundation he hasn’t set up an expository committee yet as it’s still uncertain whether the seat will open up.

“If something opens up, I’ll take a good had look at it,” he said. “We need some action in the Senate and we’ve got to start energizing the country in that chamber as well.”

Brat has been an active member of the House Freedom Caucus since he assumed office in 2014, advocating for lower spending and smaller government.

“I love serving in the House, I love being in the House Freedom Caucus, I love serving the 7th District and my constituents,” he told TheDCNF. “But I would also love to join Cruz, Rand Paul, Jeff Sessions and Tom Cotton in the Senate and get something done over there – add a little energy to make sure the House legislation doesn’t get blocked over there.”

Kaine, who is on Clinton’s short-list of potential picks to add to the Democratic ticket, campaigned alongside the former secretary of state in Annandale, Virginia Friday.
