NASA’s top climate scientist took to Twitter Friday morning to criticize British voters for choosing to leave the European Union, calling the so-called Brexit vote “stupid and selfish.”
Gavin Schmidt is the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, but long before becoming the space agency’s lead climate scientist, Schmidt was born in Britain. He’s obviously not a fan of U.K. voters’ decision to leave the EU.
#Brexit is a lot like parents not vaccinating their kids because they have no idea what polio and whooping cough look like.

Schmidt was then confronted by another Twitter user, who urged him to respect the U.K’s decision to leave the EU.
@ClimateOfGavin no it’s about parents wanting a safe place for their families and having a voice in the future of their country

To which Schmidt responded:
@KeevDesign why? Both are stupid and selfish ideas based on lies and misinformation. @Wikisteff

The Brexit won a majority of support from U.K. voters, winning by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin. That means about 1.3 million more Brits voted in favor of leaving the EU than those who voted to remain.
U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron announced he would be resigning in October. Cameron, who leads the Conservative Party, was opposed to leaving the EU, so it would have been politically challenging for him to lead the country as it severed its ties to the continent.
“The British people have voted to leave the European Union and their will must be respected,” Cameron said. “The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered.”
Ex-London Mayor Boris Johnson is the front-runner to take Cameron’s place, according to BBC News. Johnson was a major proponent of leaving the EU, and will likely bring a more conservative bent to Parliament.
