Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is no longer holding the position of Special Envoy to the Shield of Americas coalition.

Though the specific reasoning appears to be unclear, Noem will no longer fill the role of Special Envoy to the Shield of the Americas. However, she will still conduct regional diplomatic business without the Special Envoy title, CBS reports.

“Kristi Noem’s envoy status expired last month and she is no longer in the role,” a State Department official told CBS News Thursday. “She is now a senior advisor to Deputy Secretary [of State Christopher] Landau and continues to work on the Shield of the Americas portfolio.”

Noem’s envoy appointment expired just before the United Nations General Assembly last month in New York, though she still participated in diplomatic meetings.

The State Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Noem became Special Envoy in March, as her stint as Homeland Security Secretary ended amid mounting criticism and accusations of mismanagement. Her transition into this role included a five country visit to Latin America and the Caribbean, part of which coincided with her Homeland Security role, per CBS.

During her tenure leading the department, Noem came under bipartisan scrutiny for spending over $220 million on advertisements. Noem’s DHS advisor, Corey Lewandowski — whom she was rumored to have an extramarital affair with — attempted to solicit foreign government contracts with multiple Gulf States during his time at the department, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Shield of the Americas is a coalition of Caribbean and Latin American countries — established by the Trump administration on March 7 — intended to cooperate on economic stability, anti-cartel action, and other security matters.

Noem had very limited publicity in this position, with her public-facing ventures being limited to a meeting with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa on March 25, another on Sept. 22, discussions with Ecuadorian and Colombian diplomats in Washington, and meetings with regional leaders of the U.N. General Assembly, CBS reports.

This restructuring occurred mere days after Kimberly Guillifoyle resigned from her position as Special Envoy to Greece after White House pressure.

“I want to thank Kristi Noem for doing a really terrific job,” President Donald Trump said during the September meeting with Noboa.

Though she no longer holds the official envoy position, Noem will still work on diplomatic matters in the Western Hemisphere, per CBS.
