A leading Democratic Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate claimed hospitals are “cowardly” to not provide sex changes to minors with public funds.
Socialist State Assemblywoman Francesca Hong reiterated her support for sex change drugs and surgeries for minors during a “Community Conversations” livestream hosted with Brix Cider on Sunday, Breitbart News reported. She vowed to immediately veto any legislation she considered an attack on the “trans community.”
“This attack on our trans kids, especially, you know, to see what’s happening with health care — gender-affirming care that is health care — coming down from our hospitals. It’s cowardly what’s happening, and it’s important that elected officials and folks with the platform speak up and speak out to ensure that all of our students feel safe, can be themselves, and know that they have a governor that’s in their corner,” Hong said during the livestream, according to the outlet.
Wisconsin’s two largest pediatric hospitals, UW Health in Madison and Children’s Wisconsin near Milwaukee, paused prescribing puberty blockers and hormone therapy to patients under 18 in January, after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. threatened to withhold Medicare and Medicaid funding from the hospitals.
Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is one of the frontrunners in the hotly contested Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial primary race. Multiple DSA chapters in the state have endorsed her campaign.
A recent Wedgewood Polls and Isthmus Political Report survey, conducted from July 2 to July 4, shows the socialist leading the crowded Democratic primary field, with 30% of support to former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes’ 25%.
Hong’s campaign office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
“Everyone in our state deserves to feel safe, and our LGBTQ students and community deserve to live a life of dignity and be themselves, their most authentic selves. Any legislation that comes on my desk that attacks the LGBT community will be an immediate veto,” Hong said. Breitbart reported.
“And that our schools, you know — we have to make sure that we are providing mental health resources and equipping our educators, and our school counselors, and our school psychiatrists with the resources they need to be able to support our students,” she added.
Hong previously pushed to expand access to sex change drugs and surgeries using taxpayer dollars.
“We have to look at expanding health care, especially gender-affirming care,” she said on the Take 2 podcast in January. “Look at ways that we can invest in clinics to still provide that care and be vocal about uplifting trans joy and defending trans lives, especially trans kids.”
