Claim: DNC Losing Corporate Sponsors Thanks To Trump

The Democratic party is losing corporate sponsors for its convention this summer, and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump might be to blame, according to Monday reports.

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is a critical step in the party picking a presidential candidate. Democrats are at risk of losing some of their top corporate sponsors who have already pulled out of supporting the Republican National Convention (RNC) because of Trump, reports Politico. Corporations tend to support both or neither of the party conventions.

“It’s easier to say ‘no’ than ‘yes’ at this point,” Democratic Political Operative Michael Meehan told Politico. “Some of our corporate clients have said they are still planning to do both, but reserve the right that we may not send anybody in the end. Come July, their executives might stay home and watch.”

Time Warner Cable, Altria and Target have already decided to not support either convention. Bank of America and Duke Energy have not yet made decisions, despite both conventions coming up in July. Together these companies have contributed millions in the past. Meanwhile, the RNC has already lost support and the shortfall may be contributing to the lack of support on the other side.

Large corporations have grown increasingly nervous over the possibility of Trump winning the Republican nomination. Sponsoring the event could associate them with Trump — if he wins the nomination — and his bombastic and often divisive rhetoric, reports The New York Times.

Trump and his supporters have earned a reputation of promoting violence, according to reports. Physical altercations and attacks have been widely documented occurrences at Trump rallies. The reputation for violence could be problematic for companies associated with Trump.

Democrats are also dealing with their own internal problems contributing to the lack of financial support. While Clinton has remained the front-runner of her party, her rival Sen. Bernie Sanders has been able to garner significant support. Donors are less likely to cut large checks until it’s clear who the party will pick.

Both conventions are scheduled to be held towards the end of July. Trump, Clinton, Sanders and the two parties did not respond to requests for comment by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
