Despite the recent shootings of President Donald Trump and Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder Charlie Kirk, fired MS NOW host Joy Reid argued on “I’ve Had It” Monday that the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement is the real murderous cult.
The Atlantic reported in September, shortly after Kirk’s assassination, that there were more left-wing than right-wing terror attacks in 2025 as of July 4. However, Reid claimed on the podcast that MAGA is so cult-like in its support of Trump that his supporters would “commit jihad” for him.

“The fear is — and a lot of politicians have said this on and off the record — the fear is that if you don’t obey him, his cult will try to kill you,” Reid said. “And there are a lot of people who claimed and told [former Republican Utah Sen.] Mitt Romney this, and then Mitt Romney snitched on them and said people wanted to vote to impeach, but they were afraid that they’d be assassinated by Trump supporters because MAGA supporters are armed to the teeth. They are rabid in their support of him, and it’s a religion, and so they will commit jihad for Trump.”
Romney said in a 2023 biography titled, “Romney: A Reckoning,” that he heard an unnamed individual tell a high-ranking senator not to vote to convict Trump in his impeachment trial due to potential safety risks.
Many left-wing individuals rejoiced over Kirk’s assassination, as shown in a supercut posted by Grabien News founder Tom Elliot on Sept. 12. However, multiple Democrats blamed Republicans for a rise in political violence after Kirk’s assassination.
Moreover, Hunter Biden claimed on the “Wide Awake Podcast” on Nov. 6 that Kirk’s assassination benefited MAGA.
“I don’t know why Charlie Kirk was shot, but I do know this. It’s only served one group of people, Charlie Kirk’s death. MAGA. They have taken this,” Biden said. “They have wrapped themselves in it. They have righteous indignation.”
Kirk’s suspected assassin, Tyler Robinson, was in a relationship with a transgender male named Lance Twiggs, whom he seemed to confess to in a text message. Robinson’s parents told authorities that their son had become “more pro-gay and trans-rights oriented” ahead of the assassination, Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray asserted on Sept. 16.
Robinson also texted Twiggs that he had “had enough of [Kirk’s] hatred.”
Furthermore, YouGov published a poll just after Kirk’s killing finding 25% of those who were very liberal believed political violence could be warranted occasionally.
Daily Caller News Foundation co-founder Tucker Carlson also alleged in a Nov. 14 documentary that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the first would-be assassin of Trump, became radically opposed to the then-former president in a brief period of time. In a YouTube comment from January 2020, Crooks allegedly referred to Trump’s “stupidity” and accused Trump supporters of sounding like a “cult.”
