A Democratic New York City C-SPAN caller who said he was a legal migrant from Cuba criticized illegal immigrants for abusing America’s system.

Upscale New York City hotels were converted into housing for migrants under former President Joe Biden’s administration amid an influx of migrants. The caller said on “Washington Journal” that he did not receive such a benefit when he entered the U.S. in 1975 as a child, decrying the unfairness of the situation for American citizens.

“When I was born in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, when I came here as a child in 1975, a black family took us in and told my mother to find a place to live,” the caller said. “When I came here as a child, nobody gave me $9,000 cards to get food. Nobody put me in a beautiful hotel.”

He explained his circumstances when entering the U.S.

“You had a Cold War going on. So we came in here as Cuban refugees and then I got a resident alien card,” he said. “And then [in 1989] I became an American citizen.”

The caller asserted that Biden “opened up the borders” during his term in office.

“Then you had all these crazy Venezuelan gangs terrorizing half of America. That’s not the way it was back in the 70s. We had a Cold War but we came in the legal way,” he said. “And I became an American citizen the legal way. You giving these people all these $9,000 cards for them in a hotel. Come on now. While the majority of New Yorkers in New York City is homeless. That’s not fair. That’s not fair.”

“That’s not the America I remember when I came here as a child. That’s not the America I remember. They had no choice but to shut down the border,” he continued. “They had no choice but to round up these people out here because New York City got enough crime as it is. The Bronx is a shooting gallery where I live at. The place is a shooting gallery, man.”

President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) sued New York City Mayor Eric Adams in July for the city’s sanctuary laws. The announcement of the lawsuit followed an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer allegedly being ambushed and shot by two illegal migrants with lengthy criminal rap sheets in New York City’s Fort Washington Park, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had issued 6,025 detainer requests in New York City since Trump returned to the White House in January, DHS revealed in July. ICE only issued 9,472 detainers in the city during Biden’s entire tenure.
