MSNBC host Katy Tur questioned on Wednesday why Elon Musk, the most famous South African-born person in the world, would be present at an Oval Office meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Musk attended the Oval Office meeting along with Ramaphosa, President Donald Trump and other members of the administration. Tur, accusing Trump of having ambushed Ramaphosa, could not seem to wrap her head around why Musk, the most famous South African and the richest man in the world would be present at the meeting.

“Why are they choosing to do this? Why did they choose to ambush the South African president? Why was Elon Musk there? Do you have any idea?” Tur asked Politico White House and foreign affairs correspondent Eli Stokol.

Musk has repeatedly accused South Africa of being explicitly racist against “anyone who is not black,” calling the alleged laws a “terrible disgrace to the legacy of the great Nelson Mandela.” He stated in a May 16 post on X that any law that discriminates against certain races and ethnic groups are unacceptable.

“Anti-white, anti-Indian, anti-Chinese or anti any race laws are not ok! That is just Apartheid with a new name,” Musk said.

The left-wing media has criticized Trump for claiming there is a “white genocide” happening in South Africa and for playing a video of South Africans calling for the deaths of white people. The footage included a montage where people talked about “cutting the throat[s]” and shooting white people, as well as showing groups of people chanting “kill the Boer, kill the farmer.”

Ramaphosa maintained during the meeting that there is no genocide against white people happening in his country and stated the utterances made in the video are not “government policy.” South Africa’s Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen said the remarks heard in the video were made by opposition leaders and that his party is working to keep them out of power.

Trump told the South African president and government members that they allow for the opposition to “take land” and “kill white farmers” without any consequences, which Ramaphosa denied.

In the past, Musk has falsely been accused by the left-wing media of supporting apartheid because he is from South Africa. The tech mogul was born in South Africa in June 1971, making him nearly 19 years old when apartheid ended in May 1990. He moved to the U.S. in 1992 to attend Stanford University and became a U.S. citizen in 2002.

“The View” co-host Joy Behar baselessly said during a Feb. 27 segment that Musk supported apartheid as a child, which she had to quickly walk back in the next segment. Former MSNBC host Joy Reid claimed in April 2022 that Musk wanted a return to apartheid shortly after he purchased Twitter.

Musk attended an anti-apartheid concert that opposed the racial system, according to an excerpt of Walter Isaacson’s book, “Elon Musk.”
