Vice President Kamala Harris and first gentleman Doug Emhoff donated several thousand dollars to a Washington, D.C., nonprofit that openly called for fewer police and advocated for sanctuary city legislation.

Harris and Emhoff in 2023 donated $1,000 to Legal Aid DC, a progressive legal group that has pushed to defund the police and supported a sanctuary bill in Washington, D.C., according to the couple’s federal tax returns, first reported by the Washington Examiner. The couple also donated $1,000 to the group in 2021.

Legal Aid DC is Washington, D.C.,’s “oldest and largest civil legal services organization,” according to its website. The group, which represents low income clients and specializes in housing law, has a years-long history of left-wing advocacy.

In June 2020, amid the ongoing BLM riots rocking the nation, the organization published a statement declaring it “stands in solidarity” with those demonstrating and claimed violence against black Americans to be a “manifestation of our society’s persistent, deep-seated racism.” An attorney for Legal Aid DC was quoted that same month pushing for fewer police officers in Washington, D.C.

The group in December 2020 openly pushed for passage of the Sanctuary Values Act, a local bill that further prohibits cooperation between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and local authorities by barring the sharing of information and not allowing deportation officers access to local jails. In their statement of support for the ordinance, Legal Aid DC claimed ICE was reigning “terror” on the migrant community.

News of the donations come as Harris, now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, attempts to moderate her image on border security and run as a tough-on-crime prosecutor.

Harris launched a campaign ad last month claiming she supports increasing the number of Border Patrol agents, and her allies have adamantly tried to tone down the level of responsibility she was given as the Biden administration’s “border czar,” which put her in charge of addressing the root causes of illegal migration from Central America.

As a senator, however, Harris attempted to block an increase in Border Patrol agents during the Trump administration, compared ICE to the Ku Klux Klan, called then-President Donald Trump’s efforts to build border wall a “vanity project” and publicly supported the decriminalization of illegal border entries, according to a review of her immigration record.

She announced Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her pick for a running mate on Tuesday. Walz has established a far-left record on immigration issues, having signed into law state-funded health care and free college tuition for illegal migrants, approved driver’s licenses for undocumented aliens and voiced support for making Minnesota a sanctuary state.
