Community members revolted against a drag queen story hour that was set to feature an 11-year old at a local pub, according to the Associated Press.
Old Nick’s Pub in Eugene, Oregon, held a Drag Queen Story Hour Sunday that was supposed to feature an 11-year-old performer that ended up not performing, according to AP News. A crowd of 200 demonstrators and counter-demonstrators gathered outside the pub to protest the event.
The original post promoting the event said the child “is here to show you what a 11 year old drag queen can do” and “with all the charm and sweetness of a bowl of sugary cereal,” the child performer will “brighten up your morning with all her drag talent.”
The pub announced ahead of the event that people would be gathering outside the pub to create “a wall of people around the pub so that performers and those who are attending will not have to see the hate.” The pub also said that speeches may be made and encouraged attendees to bring signs.
Both sides “lobbed projectiles” and both groups had firearms, according to a statement by the Eugene Police Department. One attendee was transported to the hospital in an “unknown condition.”
Following the event, the pub promoted a fundraiser that was created to help the pub raise money for additional security for their LGBTQ events going forward.
“As a lot of you know, we at Old Nick’s experienced an intense weekend filled with racist and homophobic hate mail, physical threats of violence and repeated attacks by right wing media outlets framing our Drag Queen Storytime as nefarious,” the pub wrote on Facebook. “We made it through our event safely, but unfortunately we expect to be a target for violent extremists for a good while.”
Old Nick’s Pub did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
