The officer was trying to arrest Turner, a black woman, on outstanding warrants at an apartment complex around 10:40 p.m. Monday night, reported The Associated Press. The officer has not been identified by name but authorities said he is Hispanic.
Baytown Lt. Steve Dorris said that Turner and the officer struggled before she shocked him in the groin with his own taser. Then the officer, an 11-year veteran of the department, opened fire, police said according to the AP.
Turner yelled, “I’m pregnant,” right before the officer opened fire according to a bystander’s video footage. Turner was pronounced dead at the scene, Dorris said according to the AP.
“She was already on the ground. Why did you have to shoot her? Why did you have to kill her?” neighbor Johnathan Little said according to ABC 13.
The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. The officer was wearing a body camera, which could lead to a better understanding of the shooting.
Monday night’s shooting comes weeks after Connecticut police released footage and 911 audio of an April 16 officer-involved shooting in New Haven that led to six straight days of protests.
