Butte County Sheriff’s Deputy Aaron Parmley rescued four trapped nurses from the California wildfires Thursday and recorded the entire ordeal on his body camera.
CNN’s “New Day” played the footage during its Friday show and said Parmley switched on his camera because he thought it would capture the final moments of his life.
After Parmley’s car malfunctioned, he said he got out of his vehicle and to search for the stranded nurses on foot.
As the flames grew higher and the sky blackened with smoke, Parmley wasn’t sure he would make it out alive. But he managed to locate the nurses and they all headed for the road.
Parmley managed to spot a bulldozer in the distance and flagged him down using his flashlight. The driver saw his signal and picked them up, before driving them all to safety.
“What a selfless — I mean these are the people, the emergency responders that we rely on. And they do selfless acts like that thinking it’s going to be their last,” co-host Alisyn Camerota said.
“It just gives you a sense of what they’re seeing and feeling during those incredible moments,” co-host John Berman concluded.
The California wildfires have caused billions of dollars and damage thus far and in some cases have wiped entire towns off the map.
