US Service Member Killed In Afghanistan

An American service member was killed Thursday in Afghanistan, NATO officials said.
It was not immediately clear if the casualty was sustained in combat.
The incident is under investigation, NATO said in a news release. Military officials did not release further details.
“We mourn and honor the sacrifice of our service member,” Gen. Scott Miller, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement. “We remain committed.”
Thursday’s announcement marks the seventh American soldier to be killed in Afghanistan in 2018. The previous casualty was sustained in an insider attack in September.
The service member was assigned to NATO’s Resolute Support mission. Military officials are withholding the service member’s name pending notification to next of kin.
There are about 14,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan assigned to Resolute Support — a “train, advise, and assist” mission — and a separate mission focusing on counterterrorism operations.
