CNN political analyst Kirsten Powers said people who are skeptical of sexual assault victims are still trapped in the 1950’s, on “New Day” Wednesday.

Co-host Alisyn Camerota asked why “women our age” have experience with assault and Powers said people tend to mock women for not reporting their experiences and fail to take them seriously.

“I think, you know, based on all the people that have come forward to me, including people I’ve known my entire life that never told me about being sexually assaulted, including rapes … I do think that people had this sense during that time that… they wouldn’t be taken seriously,” Powers said.

“Where did we get this idea? Well let’s go back to the clip of Donald Trump who’s trapped in the 1950’s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s,” she continued. “I think there are a lot of people who still feel that today. precisely because there are a lot of people in this country who will mock you and say, ‘Well there’s no way this could have happened because you would have told somebody or you would have reported it.'”

Power said it’s not just the GOP or President Donald Trump who are standing up for Judge Brett Kavanaugh and said their defense of the Supreme Court nominee might discourage victims from speaking out.

“It is not just Donald Trump who is saying this,” she declared. “This is a lot of people who I actually know personally and otherwise respect and I see them coming to the defense of Brett Kavanaugh and making this argument. So if you see people doing that, why would you come forward?”

Kavanaugh was accused by Christine Blasey Ford of groping her and trying to rape her at a party back in high school, over 35 years ago. He has denied the allegations and a vote on his confirmation is expected this week.
