A 49-year-old German woman was trampled to death by an elephant while she tried to photograph the animal at a game reserve in northern Zimbabwe Wednesday.
“The information we have is that the tourists encountered a herd of elephants when they were entering the park and they started taking pictures,” Zimbabwe parks and wildlife official Tinashe Farawo said Thursday, according to the Daily Mail. “We do not know what irritated the animals which resulted in the woman being attacked.”
The woman had exited a vehicle that was supposed to protect her during her ride through Mana Pools game reserve, reported the Daily Mail.
She has not been named.
Elephants have killed multiple people in the past few years in Zimbabwe, which has the second largest elephant population in the world, according to BBC. A woman was trampled to death while returning from a nightclub with her boyfriend in September, also in northern Zimbabwe, according to The Independent.
A tour guide was trampled to death in an “out of the blue” attack by a trained elephant at a resort in western Zimbabwe in July 2017, reported The Independent. The elephant was shot and killed after the attack.
Roughly 500 people are killed by elephants per year, according to a 2005 report by National Geographic.
