A majority of Americans disagreed with New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s statement about America’s supposed lack of greatness while 1 in 5 Democrats agreed, according to a poll released Monday.
Rasmussen Reports conducted the survey on Aug. 16 and Aug. 19 after Cuomo said America was “never that great” at a legislature signing that would make sex-trafficking a felony in New York on Aug. 14.
The poll found a majority of voters across the political spectrum were not in support of the comments.
Questions asked about the favorability of Cuomo and whether voters agreed with his statement surrounding America’s greatness. Sixty-seven percent of likely voters disagreed with the statement, 17 percent agreed and 16 percent were undecided.
Cuomo received backlash after his comment, which he later declared was “inartful.” In a teleconference call with reporters, he clarified, “Of course America is great and of course America has always been great,” The Associated Press reported Saturday.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate running against Cuomo in the party’s primaries Cynthia Nixon said he was “trying to figure out what a progressive sounds like,” adding that he missed “by a mile,” according to NY1 Wednesday. New York’s gubernatorial primaries will be Sept. 13.
Rasmussen recruited 1,000 likely voters in the U.S. for the poll. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points with a 95-percent confidence level.
