DNC Serves WikiLeaks With Lawsuit Through Twitter For 2016 Email Leaks

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) served WikiLeaks, accused of illegally obtaining its emails, a lawsuit via Twitter on Friday.

By Court order, you are being served with the following legal documents,” the DNC’s lawyer’s official Twitter account wrote in a tweet Friday, linking to several legal documents.

The elusive WikiLeaks has so far been unresponsive to the DNC’s lawsuit. Previous attempts by the DNC to serve WikiLeaks have so far failed.

The DNC in its motion argued to a federal court in Manhattan that the group uses Twitter irregularly and requested it should be allowed to file the complaint on the social media platform, CBS reported Friday. The DNC argued it would feasibly be able to serve the organization on the site because of WikiLeaks high-profiled use of Twitter.

The tweet linked to summons to court for WikiLeaks’ role in the high-profile leaks of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign chairman John Podesta.

WikiLeaks is accused of a number of crimes in the civil lawsuit, including fraud, wiretapping, and misappropriating trade secrets.

In what is called the “October Surprise,” WikiLeaks leaked emails from Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta, which have yet to be disproven, that showed the DNC worked against Clinton’s primary opponent, Bernie Sanders.

The emails also resulted in then-Democratic chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s resignation. Schultz was Clinton’s 2008 campaign chairman.

Tim Kaine, who became Clinton’s vice presidential partner in the 2016 campaign, resigned in 2009 from the Democratic chairman position.

Some speculate, based off the timing as well as the email leaks, that Schultz taking the position was orchestrated to both guarantee Clinton the 2016 Democratic candidate, as well as giving Kaine the vice presidential nomination.

WikiLeaks was founded by Julian Assange, who has been held in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for the past six years.
