Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey went on a Twitter rant Monday accusing President Donald Trump of being a racist.
The tirade began after Trump belittled basketball player LeBron James on Twitter by calling him dumb. Mendenez attributed Trump’s comment to be racially motivated.
“Let’s just say it – if LeBron James was white, President Trump never would have questioned his intelligence or his charity work,” Menendez tweeted.
Let’s just say it – if LeBron James was white, President Trump never would have questioned his intelligence or his charity work. How do I know? Let’s check the history…

“How do I know? Let’s check the history…,” Menendez continued. He went on to list various occurrences of Trump’s alleged racism.
Some of the examples include instances of the president’s criticism of certain people of a minority class such as former President Barack Obama or Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California. Other instances include the president refusing to disavow former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke or referring to certain countries as “shithole countries.”
Menendez ended his rant by condemning the president, calling his history of racism “heartbreaking, maddening, and disgusting.”
Our President’s history on this issue is heartbreaking, maddening, and disgusting. But my commitment to racial justice will never waiver, and I urge my colleagues to stand strong as well.

The New Jersey senator has previously played the race card when referring to Trump’s remarks. He lashed out on the Senate floor in June calling the Trump presidency a “dark chapter” and saying “while Donald Trump’s racist themes throughout his campaign are a new low for one of America’s major political parties, they are not unique in history.”
Trump, however, has an extensive history of criticizing people he disagrees with, regardless of one’s race. Even some critics of the president admit that cherry-picking minorities to illustrate Trump as racist is disingenuous.
Jeryl Bier of The Weekly Standard came to Trump’s defense, listing the plethora of white people that Trump has gone after.

“I sometimes get irritated when I have to ‘defend’ @realDonaldTrump because I am appalled that he is our president and he earns much of the criticism he gets,” Bier tweeted.
