Trump Doles Out $1.2 Billion To States For Technical Education

President Donald Trump signed a bill Tuesday providing states with $1.2 billion to spend on technical education.

The bill renews the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, through which high schools and colleges get the bulk of their funding for technical and career-based education, according to The Washington Post. The bill received bipartisan support and was last authorized in 2006.

“Now more than 11 million students and workers will have greater access to better training and more jobs,” Trump said Tuesday at Tampa Bay Technical High School in Florida. “When we invest in our workers, we are investing in our people.”

The 2018 iteration of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act prohibits the Education secretary from dictating standards across states or localities regarding how schools spend their money.

“This important legislation will benefit millions of students [and] workers nationwide [and] equip them with the skills they need to thrive in our modern economy,” the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, tweeted.
