The so-called “deep state” was once dismissed by the media as a conspiracy theory by President Donald Trump and his supporters, yet a liberal Washington Post writer and editor has fully embraced the idea in a new column Friday.
“God bless the ‘deep state’” declared the Pulitzer-Prize winning Eugene Robinson. Despite the fact that he oddly declares “the term itself … propaganda,” Robinson nonetheless declares it a very real phenomenon made up of individuals who “[master] the details of foreign and domestic policy.”
“God bless them. With a supine Congress unwilling to play the role it is assigned by the Constitution, the deep state stands between us and the abyss,” he writes.
Because “Trump have may intentionally or unintentionally given away the store,” in his negotiations with Syria, North Korea, or Russia, Robinson says “you have to root for the deep state to find out what transpired” in his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.”
These deep state operatives can “find ways to reverse, or at least mitigate, the damage,” according to Robinson.
Who are they? Robinson doesn’t quite say. He suggests they may be some unelected intelligence operatives, but we’ll just have to take his word that they’re somehow more trustworthy than anyone the American people voted for.
“Democrats in Congress are powerless; the Republican leadership, spineless. Experienced government officials know that their job is to serve the president. But what if the president does not serve the best interests of the nation? In this emergency, the loyal and honorable deep state has a higher duty. It’s called patriotism,” Robinson adds.
Once again, Robinson presents no evidence that these deep state officials are more “loyal and honorable” than anyone in the Trump administration. Yet apparently the fact that some of them briefed the president on Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election, he feels comfortable enough handing over the nuclear football to them.
Unlike the president, these deep state officials ran on no platform in an election or even have some sort of coherent policy agenda.
No worries, according to Robinson. After all, Trump was clearly so horrible that it’s time to abandon the idea of elections altogether. So much for 2020, it looks like the deep state has it covered.
