A U.S. service member died Thursday after being wounded in a combat mission in eastern Afghanistan, according to U.S. Forces-Afghanistan Public Affairs.
Several members of the Afghan security force were also killed or wounded in the operation that ultimately cost this U.S. service member his life. At this time, the details of the fight are not publicly available. The Department of Defense will withhold the name of the fallen until 24 hours after the notification of next of kin.
Thursday’s death follows that of Army Cpl. Joseph Maciel, who was killed in an “insider attack” in central Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said in a statement.
Maciel was the third U.S. service member to be killed in action this year.
A U.S. service member was killed in a “combat engagement” in Nangarhar province in January. Four others were wounded in the fight. Another U.S. service member died in April, and another was wounded, Fox News introduced after Maciel’s death.
