U.S. District Judge John Mendez rejected President Donald Trump’s administration’s request to overturn California’s sanctuary cities law on Thursday.
Mendez wrote that there is “no place for politics in our judicial system,” and that his opinion on denying the riddance of sanctuary cities would “neither define nor solve the complicated immigration issues currently facing our Nation,” according to The Hill.
He is urging lawmakers to fix immigration issues instead of relying on courts to make decisions.
California’s sanctuary law currently limits cooperation between state and local law enforcement officials and federal immigration enforcement, The Hill reported.
Mendez also declined the administration’s request to stop an additional law that allows California officials to get information about facilities that detain immigrants, Politico reported.
