A university classified a “Why Can’t We Hate Men?” op-ed authored by one of its professors as political opinion, not discrimination, on Thursday.
University of Michigan-Flint professor Mark Perry called Northeastern University professor Suzanna Walters a “confirmed sexist and bigot” following her op-ed, reported The College Fix. Walters had previously argued for expressing contempt towards individual men instead of institutions.
“Pledge to vote for feminist women only,” Walters told men in her column published in The Washington Post. “Don’t run for office. Don’t be in charge of anything. Step away from the power. We got this. And please know that your crocodile tears won’t be wiped away by us anymore. We have every right to hate you. You have done us wrong. #BecausePatriarchy.”
Perry, who teaches economics and business finance at UM Flint, asserted to Northeastern University that Walters violated the school’s “Policy on Equal Opportunity,” which forbids harassment or discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
“She has not only publically [sic] demonized and belittled all males at Northeastern University, she called out publically [sic] for the universal hatred of all men, including all men at your university,” Perry said in an email to Northeastern obtained by The College Fix. “That makes Ms. Walters a confirmed sexist and bigot in violation of Title IX and your university’s own stated policies that prohibit such discrimination.”
“How could a male student ever expect fair, just and equitable treatment while taking a class from Professor Walters, who has publicly expressed hatred for all men?” he asked Northeastern. “How could a male faculty colleague applying for tenure and/or promotion in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology expect fair treatment from Professor Walters, after her public admission of hatred toward all men?”
Northeastern spokeswoman Shannon Nargi said that the school supports an inclusive space to learn, in which “hate has no place,” when speaking with The Daily Caller News Foundation.
“The university has more than 1,000 faculty members whose viewpoints span the entire political spectrum,” Nargi continued. “Consistent with our unwavering commitment to academic freedom, the opinions of an individual professor do not reflect the views of the university or its leadership. Northeastern is committed to fostering an environment in which controversial ideas can be discussed, debated and challenged.”
