A Google executive reportedly admitted Wednesday that it missed out on an opportunity to acquire GitHub, a software development platform, because Microsoft beat it to the punch.
“I wouldn’t have minded buying them, but it’s OK,” said Diane Greene, head of Google’s cloud technology department, according to Bloomberg.
Microsoft bought GitHub earlier in the month for $7.5 billion in stock, allowing it access and oversight of a massive community of developers (roughly 28 million). Microsoft said it will “operate independently” and maintain the platform as one “for all developers in all industries.”
“Microsoft is a developer-first company, and by joining forces with GitHub we strengthen our commitment to developer freedom, openness and innovation,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a press release published June 4. “We recognize the community responsibility we take on with this agreement and will do our best work to empower every developer to build, innovate and solve the world’s most pressing challenges.”
GitHub is used by many of the biggest tech companies, which often find the open-source coding and projects of considerable value. The founder of GitHub reportedly went with Microsoft for the deal because he has a good relationship with Nadella.
