The Trump administration has received almost 19,000 requests for products to be excluded from steel and aluminum tariffs, according to Bloomberg.

Companies can request that a product not be subject to tariffs if it is not produced domestically. The Department of Commerce will determine if these waivers are granted.

“It’s already pretty painful to begin with, and if we don’t get the exclusion, it’s going to be worse for us,” Ty Taylor, president of Greenfield Industries told Bloomberg. Greenfield Industries, which produces cutting tools, has applied for over 1,100 product waivers.

Companies are looking to creative ways to get the administration’s approval. Borusan Mannesmann Pipe U.S. Inc., a steel pipe producer, is offering its employees cash prizes for the most creative postcards to the administration regarding waiver approvals.

“I didn’t know that this would do anything, and I still don’t know, but I’ve got a good feeling about it,” Joel Johnson, Borusan Mannesmann’s CEO, told Bloomberg of the postcard push.
