Obama Secretly Met With 2020 Contenders

Former President Barack Obama has been quietly meeting with a number of Democratic frontrunners for the 2020 presidential election over the past few months, offering advice and an ear for the candidates.

Obama has met with nine presidential hopefuls, including Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, former Vice President Joe Biden and others, who are seeking guidance and to bounce ideas off the former president, Politico reported.

The meetings took place at Obama’s private office in Northwest D.C., not far from where the former president and his family currently live. The discussions have reportedly focused on what the Democratic party should focus on during the election and what would be larger distractions to its efforts.

Obama is not expected to formally endorse a 2020 candidate until the nominee is chosen during the primaries. Similarly, he is reportedly going to hold off midterm endorsements until the fall.

His privative meetings aren’t the only moves the former president is making in the world of politics. Obama is also scheduled to attend a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) fundraising event later in June in the San Francisco Bay Area.

While the likes of Sanders and Biden are consistently being floated for the 2020 bid, Warren is looking more and more like she could be the Democratic frontrunner in 2020.

Warren is raking in campaign donations like few others in the upper chamber of Congress and many believe she is a favorite to become the Democratic nominee for president in 2020. The Massachusetts senator cleaned up in the first quarter of 2018, bringing in $3.12 million. Warren has some $15 million in cash on hand for her own Senate reelection campaign.

Republicans are trailing Democrats in fundraising. The DCCC has raised over $150 million in the 2018 election cycle, compared to the Republican National Congressional Committee’s roughly $121.5 million.
