Priests found a whopping $40,000 in a Roman Catholic Church inside a confession box after originally believing the money package was a bomb, according to The Guardian Friday.
The Santa Maria delle Grazie nelle Forcini located near the Vatican boasted approximately $42,305 hidden inside a confession box located by a chair belonging to a priest, The Guardian reported. Police were called to the scene Wednesday after Father Giovanni Martire Savina found the surprising treasure. The expensive findings were composed in piles of €50 bills, worth approximately $59 in two plastic bags, according to according to The Local.
“Until a few years ago every now and then someone would leave substantial monetary offers, even €1,000, but never this much, ” Savina said, according to The Guardian. “Certainly, such a sum would be useful for the church, but not to the detriment of someone else.”
“At the moment we are not excluding any hypothesis,” Salvatore Friano, the police officer leading the investigation, told Il Messaggero.
“We are checking the origin of the banknotes and surveillance cameras in order to try to establish if [the money] came from a benefactor who wanted to donate to the church or someone who wanted to get rid of it,” Friano added.

Police believe that someone may have illicitly acquired the money and later left the money at the church as a form of repenting for their sin.
