Baylor University Won’t Approve Conservative Club. And It Won’t Say Why Not

A group of students at Baylor University has been trying to start a conservative club, and the university keeps dragging its feet.

Baylor student Zachary Miller attempted to start a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter at the Texas university and submitted a charter request on Feb. 12, according to Campus Reform. The students have yet to hear back from the university, which continues to claim that the request remains under review in order to thoroughly vet the students’ request.

TPUSA is a conservative student movement that raises awareness about the benefits of free markets and limited government.

Baylor has reviewed 15 other spring charter requests and approved them all. Those charters were approved after six to eight weeks, but it has been more than 18 weeks since Miller submitted his request for a charter.

“The charter application for Turning Point USA remains under review consistent with our stated policies and procedures,” a Baylor spokesperson said, Campus Reform reported. “It is our understanding that updates related to the progress of the application have been shared with the student applicants throughout the process,” the spokesperson added, alleging the students have not been kept in the dark about the delay to their charter request despite the fact that it hasn’t been approved.

“I understand your frustration with the timeline, it is an issue that we are addressing with all of our organizations going through the chartering process,” Student Activities representative Lacey Lehrmann wrote in an April 5 email to Miller.

The university has not given the students a reason for why the vetting process is taking so long, other than to tell them that it is part of the process.
