Google Is Solving Discrimination Through Inclusive Emojis

Google is making emojis more “inclusive” for everyone by adding new emojis and changing old ones, a Google emoji designer wrote in a tweet Wednesday.

The company is removing the cartoon egg from the salad emoji in order to make emojis more inclusive for vegans, Head of Design for Google Emoji Jennifer Daniel said in the tweet.

Some Twitter users asked if the tweet was a joke or parody, but Daniel’s LinkedIn verifies that it is indeed her Twitter account and that she really is an emoji designer at Google. Other Twitter users mocked the decision, calling it “eggphobic bigotry.”

“We’re slowly giving some our emojis more love. Our goat is no longer so angry. The turtle really needed a hug. And we gave the Grinning Face With One Large and One Small Eye some anti-anxiety meds,” Daniel added in another tweet.

Daniel wrote a Medium blog post called “The Problem with Liberal White Designers” in January 2017. She posted an edited version of a talk she gave to DynamicMTL in Montreal. She lamented both white liberals supposed failures and the 2016 election of President Donald Trump. “Despite all my advantages as a white person, I too am oppressed!” she wrote.

Following Amazon’s suit, Google’s executive board announced it is officially adopting the Rooney Rule for its board, which will require the company interview at least one minority for every board position opening.

During a Google and parent company Alphabet shareholder meeting on Wednesday, lawyer Justin Danhof, general counsel of the National Center for Public Policy Research and director of the Free Enterprise Project, asked the company to consider the diversity of opinion internally.

“Silicon Valley elites often preen about their commitment to diversity and inclusion, but I don’t think many of you know what that means,” Danhof wrote in a speech to the executives and shareholders. “Diversity isn’t what someone looks like. It’s the sum of what they think, feel and believe. And at this company, thinking and believing in conservative policies appear to be verboten.”

“Without conservatives and libertarians, there is groupthink, which is extremely dangerous since everyone will think the same exact thing and never question leadership,” Danhof told The Daily Caller News Foundation on Wednesday.
