Alabama Republican Rep. Martha Roby will face a runoff election after failing to win a majority of votes in Tuesday night’s primary.
Roby, who came under fire after she un-endorsed then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016, will now face former Alabama Rep. Bobby Bright, who was a registered Democrat until he switched parties to run against Roby in the Tuesday primary, The Washington Post reported.
With 59 percent of the precincts reported, the Associated Press announced Roby would face Bright in a runoff election. Of the 59 percent, Roby received 39 percent compared to Bright’s 29 percent, even though Roby was supported by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).
“The NRCC congratulates Martha Roby on her strong finish in tonight’s primary,” NRCC Chairman Steve Stivers said in an emailed statement after the news broke. “The results proved that Martha Roby fights for Alabamans first and gets results. We continue to stand behind her and are confident she’ll emerge victorious in the coming runoff.”
