Johns Hopkins University stripped Bill Cosby of his honorary degree from the school Thursday after a jury judged the actor and comedian guilty for drugging and molestation charges.
The school revoked the 2004 degree after a jury deemed Cosby guilty of drugging and molesting former Canadian basketball player Andrea Constand, reported The Baltimore Sun.
“As a university, we stand in firm opposition to sexual assault, whether on our campuses or elsewhere,” Johns Hopkins spokesman Dennis O’Shea said, in a statement obtained by The Baltimore Sun. “This decision underscores that opposition.”
A campus group previously asked Johns Hopkins to rescind the degree in 2015. The same year, Goucher College rescinded the comedian’s honorary degree.
Cosby also received honorary degrees from the University of Baltimore and the University of Maryland. UB’s board of regents is currently deliberating over rescinding the comedian’s degree, while a University of Maryland spokeswoman said its honorary degree committee is investigating the incident “immediately.”
An East Baltimore community center named after Cosby and his wife, Camille after the couple gave $2 million to the center, removed the couple’s names from the building right after the Thursday verdict.
