Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show,” said impeaching President Donald Trump is a bad idea and called the proposal “extreme” during an interview with Diane Sawyer Thursday.
Colbert compared Trump’s situation to Richard Nixon and Watergate before backing off and urging caution.
“I remember the Nixon administration. I remember Watergate,” Colbert told Sawyer. “We have a president now who is under investigation. Some people are calling for his impeachment. I don’t actually think that’s that great of an idea. Because I think if Donald trump is to leave office, it should be through political means, not necessarily through judicial or extreme constitutional remedies.”
Colbert has been an outspoken critic of Trump and often mocks the president for his attacks against the mainstream media. Earlier this year he bought a billboard in Times Square to lobby for one of Trump’s fake news awards. He did not win.
