Walmart is removing women’s interest magazine Cosmopolitan from its checkout aisles, USA Today reported Tuesday.

Cosmopolitan is bearing the brunt of the “Me Too” movement. The magazine will no longer be displayed in the checkout aisles at 5,000 Walmart stores. The retail giant deemed the fashion, style and sex magazine too racy for the checkout line.

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) worked with Walmart to craft the new policy, the organization said in a press release Wednesday.

“You can go through and buy your groceries with your family knowing you don’t have to be exposed to this graphic and often degrading and offensive material,” Haley Halverson, NCOSE’s vice president of advocacy and outreach, said during a Facebook live video Tuesday. “Instead, all of these magazines will be moved, in isolation, to the magazine racks.”

“This is one less drop of hyper-sexualized media that is going to be bombarding people in their everyday lives, which does make a difference, especially in this Me Too culture that we’re living in, where we really want a culture that will respect women and ensure their dignity is understood,” Halverson said.

The non-profit celebrated the change as a “victory.” The organization believes removing the magazine will prevent minors from seeing inappropriate content featured in Cosmopolitan.
