The Parkland shooting school’s students must now wear clear backpacks as a security measure going forward, the superintendent announced Wednesday.
The district plans to give Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students the clear backpacks when they return from spring break, Superintendent Robert Runcie told families in a letter.
“When students return from spring break, clear backpacks are the only backpacks that will be permitted on campus. Students will be provided with a clear backpack, at no cost, when they return to campus,” Runcie noted in the letter.
The school is attempting to create stricter security measures after a former student killed 17 classmates and teachers in February and wounded countless others. Other planned security measures entail all students wearing identification badges while they are on campus and the addition of more law enforcement officers at the school.
There have also been other threats of violence against the school in the days since the Valentine’s Day shooting. The brother of the Parkland shooter trespassed onto campus Monday to “soak in” the scene of the shooting, while another two students made threats against the school over social media Wednesday.
Various students, who survived the shooting, have turned into activists. They are planning a march on Washington to call for gun control and for politicians to cut ties with the National Rifle Association.
