Former Trump adviser Michael Caputo warned President Donald Trump against meeting with special counsel Bob Mueller, on CNN’s “New Day” Monday, but said the showdown is probably inevitable.
Caputo would strongly advise against Trump meeting Mueller face to face.
“I wouldn’t advise it. I hope he doesn’t,” Caputo said. “But I think he looks like he wants to. That’s going to be a situation fraught with peril but one the president believes he’s ready for.”
Trump runs the risk of tripping up and “unintentionally lying,” Caputo said.
“I think anybody sitting in front of a special prosecutor stands a chance of a process crime, like unintentionally lying,” Caputo said.
“Unintentionally lying,” host Chris Cuomo said. “You must intend to lie by definition.”
Anyone in Trump’s shoes would lawyer up and tread lightly because of the high stakes involved, Caputo said.
“People like myself as a witness in this investigation would lawyer up, even if they’ve done nothing wrong to be sure that they stay straight with the investigators and the interrogators. And that’s what’s really fraught with peril here,” he concluded.
