The 96-year-old former “Bookkeeper of Auschwitz” died before starting his jail sentence for participation in the Holocast, according to a Monday report.

Oskar Groening died March 9th, 2018, prior to starting his four-year prison sentence for his role as acting as an accessory to the murder of 300,000 Jews at German concentration camp Auschwitz, the Daily Mail reported. Groening was nicknamed the “Bookkeeper of Auschwitz” based on counting the amount of the victims’ money when they arrived at the concentration camp and sending the bank notes to Berlin. Groening himself did not murder anyone at Auschwitz.

The former Nazi was convicted in 2015 for his role in the Holocaust. Groening then filed an appeal to skirt his prison sentence due to his age and poor health. Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court rejected his appeal in a Dec. 21, 2017, ruling and sentenced him to four years in prison, CBS News reported. Groening then made a plea for clemency Jan. 15. This was one of the last Holocaust-related court trials. (RELATED: I’m A Jew. I Had No Idea I’d Be Spending Christmas Among Neo-Nazis).

Groening admitted he was morally guilty based on assisting in the murder of Jewish people at Auschwitz. He was first noticed when doing interviews in 2005, admitting his wrongdoings in an attempt to persuade Holocaust deniers to accept the truth, according to Reuters.

Prison authorities have yet to provide Groening’s death certificate.
