The man who assaulted Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, leaving him seriously injured, pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge in court Friday.

Rene Boucher was charged with assaulting a member of Congress resulting in personal injury and was released on a $25,000 bond while awaiting his sentencing date, which is set for June 15, CNN reported.

Prosecutors have said they are looking at pushing a 21-month jail sentence on Boucher, after he attacked Paul outside of his home in Bowling Green, Ky., which left the senator with six broken ribs, pleural effusion and pneumonia.

After the Nov. 3 attack, Kelly Paul, the senator’s wife, made it clear that her husband was attacked by their neighbor and that there was no prior altercation between the two. She called out the media for falsely describing the incident.

“This was not a ‘scuffle,’ a ‘fight’ or an ‘altercation,’ as many in the media falsely describe it,” Paul wrote. “It was a deliberate, blindside attack.” (RELATED: Rand Paul’s Wife Details Their Neighbor’s ‘Terrifying’ Attack)

After originally denying the attack, Boucher admitted to running onto Paul’s property and tackling the senator after seeing the senator stacking more brush on a brush pile in statements to the FBI and Kentucky State Police.
