Mississippi State Hosts Christian Abortion Doctor. And People Aren’t Happy About It

Mississippi State University (MSU) will host Christian abortionist Willie Parker Thursday to explain why he feels it is his Christian duty to perform abortions, much to the chagrin of a number of students and pro-life groups.

Christian abortion doctor Willie Parker will speak at the Thursday event, sponsored by the university’s Gender Studies program to explain to students why his religious beliefs compel him to perform abortions. Parker has explained that over time he became “morally convinced that is was not a conflict of my Christian values to provide abortion care, and in fact it became unethical to me not to do so.”

He recently published a memoir, “Life’s Work: A Moral Argument for Choice,” in which he wrote, “I believe that as an abortion provider, I am doing God’s work.” He claims he is protecting women’s right to decide their futures for themselves and to live their lives as they see fit, according to The New York Times.

Pro-life group Personhood Mississippi spokesperson, Ashley Sigrest, called Mississippi State out for perpetrating a “double standard” because the pro-life groups that have spoken on campus have funded their own events while the university is footing the cost of Parker’s event, according to the Clarion Ledger.

“It’s not that we want to stop him,” Sigrest said. “We believe in free speech, even if we don’t agree with what he’s saying. We just want the equal time to have a speaker be funded just as Willie Parker is being funded.”

Sigrest was raped when she was 18 years old and had an abortion, but now volunteers with Personhood Mississippi. “What I chose to do to my unborn child was far worse than what my rapist chose to do to me. My rapist did take advantage of me, he did hurt me, but what my abortion did was far greater,” she said, according to the Jackson Free Press.

“Dr. Parker does not help women; he commits abortions on women and takes their money which is anything but compassionate,” Students for Life of America Eastern Regional Director Michele Hendrickson said, the Clarion Ledger reported.

Mississippi State Students for Life are planning several events in response to Parker’s talk according to MSU chief communications officer, Sid Salter. They will host nationally recognized pro-life speaker Christina Bennet at the university next Wednesday and as well as a “Panel for Life” March 7.

Several groups, including the American Family Association and Pro-Life Mississippi, will hold a rally Thursday rally to protest Parker’s appearance at the school.
