Planned Parenthood will host an event Wednesday aimed at understanding and deconstructing what the abortion organization admits are its racist roots in eugenicist founder, Margaret Sanger.
“Come join Planned Parenthood Generation Action for a panel discussion on the racist roots of Planned Parenthood during Black History Month,” reads the description of the event title “Decolonizing Sexual Health.”
Hosted by University of Florida student group Planned Parenthood Generation Action UF and UF Black Student Union the Wednesday 6pm to 8pm event will address “the racist roots of the birth control movement, specifically pertaining to the influence of eugenics.”
The description points to Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret Sanger, who held “beliefs, practices, and associations with eugenics that we acknowledge and denounce.” The event seeks to rectify the wrong that Sanger began, specifically sterilization abuse and disproportionately advocating for black communities to abort. It also aims to enlighten its attendees on how reproductive health resources are disproportionally inaccessible to minority populations according to its description.
“As they say, admitting you have a problem is the first step. However, acknowledging the racist roots of your organization is meaningless unless you also acknowledge that the racist practices of Planned Parenthood continue to this day,” Students for Life of America president, Kristan Hawkins told The Daily Caller News Foundation Wednesday, explaining that the event is a good place to start but that the organization has more work to do.
A PBS Frontline video “Anti-abortion Crusaders: Inside the African-American Abortion Battle” investigated the abortion industry’s role in the black community, featuring multiple experts and organization leaders. “Our women are being lied to and victimized,” New Calvary Baptist Church’s Senior Pastor, Rev. Clenard Childress Jr. postulates in the December video.
He explains how the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger — whom he calls a brilliant strategist — came up with “The Negro Project” to reduce the number of blacks via sterilization and abortion. “Planned Parenthood has taken it far beyond what the Klu Klux Klan thought they could possibly take it,” Childress said. “How do you calm down over genocide?”
“We need more African-Americans informed on the best kept secret in America; that is black genocide via the targeting of African Americans by the abortion industry,” Childress said. He is also the Assistant National Director of LEARN – the largest, African-American, evangelical pro-life ministry in the United States.
Others — like reproductive rights historian Cynthia Greenlee who studies abortion as it affects African-Americans — don’t think black people are being targeted for abortion more so than whites. “It’s a potent argument because the history of medical racism is real,” Greeleee states in the video, noting the history of sterilization abuse. She says, however, the same was being done in white communities and that Sanger did not intend to target the black community.
Black people make up about 13 percent of the U.S. population, but account for about 40 percent of the country’s abortions. Roughly 360,000 of Planned Parenthood’ s 2.4 million patients are black individuals.
