Energy Secretary Rick Perry said President Donald Trump’s administration was “exporting freedom” by producing and exporting American liquid natural gas.
Perry sat on a panel Friday with Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke at the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). In his opening remarks, Perry claimed that the administration’s approach to energy and regulation has been “nothing less than world-changing.”
“Today the United States of America is the number one oil and gas-producing country in the world,” Perry said. “It didn’t happen because of government regulations. It happened because government basically got out-of-the-way in some cases and allowed the private sector to go out there and do what the private sector does.”
Perry stressed that America’s leading role in supplying energy frees allies and others from foreign suppliers that would “put those values that those countries have in jeopardy.”
“We don’t just export American LNG around the world, we export freedom,” Perry said.
The United States is on track to be the second largest exporter of natural gas by the end of Trump’s first term in office, behind Australia and ahead of Qatar. The success of Trump’s “energy dominance” strategy was built on the stance the administration took against regulation, according to Perry.
“We’re not going to regulate our way into Nirvana because that is a fallacy,” Perry said.
