The left-wing website Salon retracted an article titled “Why is the Bible so badly written?” Thursday because it was too badly written to meet their editorial standards.
The news outlet came under withering fire on social media after publishing the article Thursday morning, in which the author, Valerie Tarico, claimed the Bible is littered with “awkward constructions” and “weak character development.” Salon shirked responsibility for the piece by claiming it had been republished to Salon.com from a partner website.
Thank you for your feedback. We heard you. Upon further review, we determined that this article, which was republished to Salon from a partner website, did not meet our editorial standards.

People on Twitter blasted Tarico–who claims to have authored books–for misusing words and making a litany of grammatical mistakes.

While the article can no longer be found on Salon, Tarico previously published it to her own website.
“Millions of Evangelicals and other Christian fundamentalists believe that the Bible was dictated by God to men who acted essentially as human transcriptionists,” Tarico claims. “If that were the case, one would have to conclude that God is a terrible writer.”
“A book written by a god should be some of the best writing ever produced,” she continues. “It should beat Shakespeare on enduring relevance, Stephen Hawking on scientific accuracy, Pablo Neruda on poetry, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn on ethical coherence, and Maya Angelou on sheer lucid beauty—just to name a few.”
She claims the Bible matches none of the above authors, despite Shakespeare’s work merely reiterating biblical truths; Solzhenitsyn blaming ethical decline on men forgetting God; and Angelou’s tradition of writing with a Bible next to her “just to hear the language, hear the rhythm, and remind myself how beautiful English is.”
