Congressional Black Caucus Is Still Unimpressed With Trump’s Speech

The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) remains unimpressed with the president’s State of the Union speech, saying there is “nothing promising” about President Donald Trump’s ability to read from a teleprompter.
The CBC released a statement after Tuesday’s State of the Union with a list of issues they had with Trump’s speech. Overall, the group felt that nothing has changed with the president, considering that “every action” he has taken over the past year hurt minorities and poor people.
“There is nothing promising about President Trump’s ability to read a speech from a teleprompter,” the group said in a statement. “Every action taken by him over the past year has been destructive for poor, working-class, and middle-class communities throughout this country, as well as communities of color. He said nothing tonight that wipes that slate clean.”

“But that’s not all. The tax cut he boasts about will be paid for by cutting programs that disproportionately serve the poor and working-class communities, as well as communities of color.“

Trump called for a new infrastructure plan and laid out his vision for immigration reform as he addressed Congress Tuesday night. The president also touted the unemployment rate falling during the past year, especially calling out the black unemployment rate.
The CBC took issue with Trump bragging about black unemployment, pointing to the fact that the rate has been falling for awhile.
“The low black unemployment rate he boasted about has been falling for eight years and has only changed by one percent since he took office,” they said. “In addition, while the black unemployment rate is at an historic low, it is still double the rate of white unemployment and doesn’t take into account the fact that African Americans are disproportionately underemployed and underpaid.”
